Демократична република Конго

Ilhan Kyuchyuk (ALDE ), in writing

Unfortunately, the political situation in Democratic Republic of Congo is very disturbing. Country’s fragile young democracy is under a serious threat. According to reports from various sources authorities in Democratic Republic of Congo are trying to break the constitution and to cancel upcoming presidential elections in November 2016. In order to do so, Congolese security and intelligence officials have initiated a severe crackdown on peaceful activists, political leaders and ordinary civilians who oppose peacefully unconstitutional attempts of ruling president Kabila to amend the constitution in order to stay beyond his constitutionally mandated two-term limit. As a world’s leading democratic power and human rights champion, EU should urge Congolese authorities to respect their own constitution, to guarantee holding of transparent, credible and inclusive elections, to promote and protect human rights and fundamental freedoms. At deeper level, the EU should expand cooperation with UN’s mission in the country (MONUSCO) to further protect civilians and consolidate peace. Undoubtedly, only stable democracy provides the natural environment for protection of human rights and peace therefore we cannot allow ourselves to lose it in DRC.
