MEPs from DPS alert the EC about the NEXO scandal

Ilhan KYUCHYUK, Iskra MIHAYLOVA and Atidzhe ALIEVA VELI in the EP in Brussels

In a written inquiry to the European Commission, MEPs Ilhan Kyuchyuk, Iskra Mihaylova, and Atidzhe Alieva-Veli are calling for a unified European regulatory framework to prevent the funding of political parties and entities by questionable crypto companies.

In their statement, the DPS delegation highlights the growing interest in using cryptocurrencies for political donations and the increasing involvement of crypto companies in political campaigns. Through their letter to the European Commission, the three DPS MEPs express concerns that laws may be circumvented when individual employees or executives from these companies make personal donations to a specific political party.

“This is also the case in Bulgaria, where a large-scale international investigation revealed that a crypto company involved in extensive money laundering, including funds from Russian oligarchs and terrorist organizations, financed a certain political party through its employees.

  • In light of such uncertainty and the rapidly developing crypto industry, does the Commission plan to establish a unified European regulatory framework to prevent the financing of political parties and entities by questionable crypto companies?
  • How does the Commission intend to safeguard European democracy when representatives of political entities are elected to leadership positions, including in the European Parliament, with funds from criminal organizations?”

These are the questions raised in the DPS delegation’s letter to the European Commission.
