I voted in favour because we are living in a very insecure world – a world in which cross—border organised crime and terrorism are taking place. Therefore, we should support use of passenger name record (PNR) data at EU level in order to prove, detect and investigate suspects involved in illegal cross—border activities. In this regard, it is valuable to emphasise the fact that a common EU PNR system would harmonise Member States’ legal provisions and avoid legal uncertainty and security gaps, whilst at the same time safeguarding data protection. However, we should be convinced that Member States will inform passengers about the collection of PNR data and about their civil rights.
