Ilhan Kyuchyuk: If the European Commission fails to send a clear signal on the accession of at least one country by the end of its mandate, a historic opportunity will be lost

“Today, the EU is searching for its new raison d’être – should we remain a loose union, or move toward a federation capable of making faster and more effective decisions? This is a key question for the Union’s strategic autonomy,” said MEP Ilhan Kyuchyuk during his participation in the event Liberals Shaping the Future: 20 Years of Bulgaria and Romania’s EU Accession Treaty, organized to mark the 20th anniversary of the signing of Bulgaria’s EU Accession Treaty.

He noted that Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha contributed to the development of a culture of coalition governance in Bulgaria, fostering trust between political parties – an essential precondition for stability and a clear strategic orientation toward the EU. In the context of the challenges faced by the Western Balkan countries, this stands out as a key difference linked to the lack of long-term vision and political will in the region.

Kyuchyuk emphasized that Bulgaria has made significant progress in democratization and institutional development, inspiring several generations in their aspiration for a free and just Europe.

“At the start of the accession process, Bulgarian society had a better understanding of the EU and its mechanisms than it does today. This is a signal that new efforts are needed to bring citizens and European institutions closer together,” the MEP said.

“The future of the EU cannot be one of stagnation. Internal reforms are necessary, but so are tangible steps toward enlargement,” Ilhan Kyuchyuk declared.

The MEP underlined that if the current European Commission does not send a clear signal for the accession of new member states, it will miss a historic opportunity to continue the founding vision of the Union as a continent of stability and prosperity.

In conclusion, Kyuchyuk expressed optimism about the EU’s future and called on Bulgaria to actively define and defend its role within the European project — by speaking openly and confidently to its citizens.
