lhan Kyuchyuk: “Bulgaria’s failures are rooted in the Borisov and Petkov models. For two years now, the right path has not been found, and today we are already talking about the ‘Bulgarian scenario.’ A nation and state divided at its core cannot defend its foreign policy priorities. The Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) paid a high price for Bulgaria’s membership in the EU and NATO and was the only political force that clearly stated that it does not matter who is in power—what matters is Bulgaria’s membership in Schengen and full integration. This is precisely why we must succeed in ensuring that Bulgarian citizens stop feeling rejected and in removing the stigma weighing on democracy and our society,” said Ilhan Kyuchyuk, leader of the European Liberals, during the conference “Perspectives for the Future: Responsibility.”
Kyuchyuk addressed topics related to the EU’s collective leadership and the consolidation of the Union in times of crises.
“Despite its slow pace, it has become evident that the democratic model is far superior because it does not lead to war. Where society is involved, where there is a debate with civil society, there is no war. The idea of peace is not obsolete for the EU.
At the same time, however, did the EU’s collective leadership withstand the test of time and history, ensuring peace and, with it, prosperity? For seventy years, Europe was accustomed to living in a state of peace, one that brought prosperity, high democratic standards, and a desire for reform, enabling it to act as a geopolitical factor in global issues. But European leadership made two mistakes: the first was arrogance, as old Europe relied too long on inertia without noticing the breakthroughs made by other geopolitical actors. European leadership was put to the test and did not pass it,” Kyuchyuk stated.
The event, which gathered hundreds of women from across Bulgaria, took place in Veliko Tarnovo and included MRF women activists. Among the speakers were MRF Chairman Mustafa Karadayi, the party’s Deputy Chairman Yordan Tsonev, Dr. Nigar Dzhafer, Emel Etem, Filiz Hyusmenova, MEPs Iskra Mihaylova and Atidzhe Alieva-Veli, Velislava Krasteva, journalist Valeria Veleva, and political analyst Dimitar Ganev.
