Bulgarian MEP Ilhan Kyuchuk welcomed a visiting delegation from Pazardzhik to the European Parliament, which included victims of political repression and their descendants.
In his remarks, Kyuchuk criticized the government’s management of the country for the lack of a clearly defined and recognizable image of Bulgaria on the European stage. “Unfortunately, over the years, our country has failed to establish its own calling card—a cause, achievement, initiative, or policy with which the name Bulgaria would be unequivocally and positively associated in Europe,” he emphasized.
The MEP also stressed the need for Bulgaria’s national position to be formulated consistently and strategically in Sofia, through coordination among institutions, and then clearly and consistently defended at the European level through all diplomatic and communication channels.
He also highlighted the ongoing political crisis in the country as a significant problem. According to Kyuchyuk, the frequent series of elections is exhausting Bulgarian society and undermining trust in institutions, which inevitably affects Bulgaria’s standing in Europe.
“We are on the eve of new elections, and the hope is that after April 19, there will be an opportunity to stabilize the political environment and establish a clearer vision for the country’s development. Voter turnout on election day will be decisive.”
During the visit, the group learned about how European institutions function, the role of the European Parliament, and the decision-making process in the European Union.
