Worsened economic, political and social situation in Venezuela has created conditions for massive human rights violations. In this regard, opposition victory in recent parliamentary elections on 6 December 2015 was welcomed by many as the beginning of the transition period and democratisation. The EU should provide assistance and support to new Venezuelan government, which has not an easy task to tackle a wide range of human rights issues, such as impunity, accountability for extrajudicial killings, arbitrary arrest and detention, fair trials, the independence of the judiciary, freedom of assembly and association, and media freedom. We should call on Venezuelan authorities to work actively to promote and protect human rights in their own country and beyond, particularly in the shadow of Venezuela’s membership of the UNHCR.
