There is no doubt that the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (DCFTA) will benefit both sides (the EU and Tunisia). In the case of Tunisia, it will help support economic reforms and further consolidate young democracy in that country. Whereas, in the case of the EU, the deal will not only facilitate trade and economic growth but also will provide an opportunity to the Union to promote democracy, the rule of law, human rights and fundamental freedoms in a neighbouring country, which is located in a very unstable North-African region characterised by extensive human rights violations, irregular migration and the presence of Islamic State. Namely, in this context, I supported the DCFTA with Tunisia because above all it will be a stepping stone for further economic and political integration of the Euro-Mediterranean region that will bring in long—term economic growth, stability, security, peace and prosperity.
