A delegation of the European Parliament attended a ceremony marking the International Holocaust Day. The 27th of January this year marks the 75-th anniversary since the liberation of Auschwitz – Birkenau, the death camp where 1.1 million people were killed by the Nazis, most of them Jews. Bulgaria played an important role during this period, being the only country to prevent the deportation of its citizens to Nazi concentration camps during World War II, rescuing nearly 48 000 Jews.
The anniversary commemoration this year brought together Heads of State and representatives of nearly 50 countries from around the world, as well as representatives of the European Commission, Council of Europe, European Council, UN and UNESCO as well as survivors of the concentration camp.
“We must not forget what happened here. On the contrary – we must remind of it and show zero tolerance for anti-Semitism, as well as for any other form of racism and discrimination. There simply cannot be a place for that in Europe – not after the pains of World War II and totalitarian regimes. We must never again allow the destructive force of hatred to take over. The rising trends in this regard are disturbing, which is why events such as the one today need to happen, survivors – to be heard – and all of us to be reminded that the fires of resentment are ignited from small gestures and words of hatred. Repeating the same mistakes over and over again and expecting different results would truly be an insanity”, said MRF MEP Ilhan Kyuchyuk, who attended the commemoration ceremony. The Renew Europe Delegation, in which Kyuchyuk took part, included the Chair of the Renew Europe political Group at the EP – Dacian Ciolos, the First Vice-Chair of the Renew Europe Group – Malik Azmani, the Vice-President of the EP, Nicola Beer and MEPs from seven member-states. The visit also included meetings with survivors of the concentration camp and with the President of the Republic of Poland – Andrzej Duda.
