The MRF/Renew Europe Member of the European Parliament Ilhan Kyuchyuk visited the UK in order to attend the Liberal Democrats’ party annual conference. Kyuchyuk, who is also a Vice President of the European Liberals, has been working on the Brexit topic since the beginning of this process.
Today, he supported again his colleagues in the last crucial weeks before the denouement of Britain’s exit from the EU. The Liberal Democrat leader Joe Swinson the European Parliament Coordinator on Brexit Guy Verhofstadt also participated in the event.
“There is no excuse for the denying of the ideal of united Europe. I was next to you during the referendum campaign and it is wonderful to see that 3 years later the passion for Europe is still strong and visible. You are not alone, you have the support of liberals all over Europe! We stand with you in the fight for stopping Brexit, because throwing Europe 80 years back is not the vision, expressed by the young people in Europe! We must fight on their behalf, and insist on concrete actions’, said Kyuchyuk in front of the 500 delegates in his welcoming speech.
According to Kyuchyuk, the European Union today is not perfect, but it is unthinkable for a country to abandon the European idea just like that, especially at the face of so many global challenges, the solutions of which is only possible through common, solidarity actions.
“For the first time in the recent decades, the European elections marked a high voter turnout of more than 50%. This shows the commitment to the European project, but also – that the EU citizens, and when I say this, I firmly include the British citizens, sent us a strong signal: that ‘exits’ are not the way forward. The citizens gave a mandate to the pro-European forces, both in the UK and in the rest of the EU, to work together for achieving a genuine reform and finding solutions to their growing concerns”, added Ilhan Kyuchyuk.
