During the debates in the EP with Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, MEPs discussed issues related to the progress of vaccinations, the supply of vaccines across the EU and the transparency of contracts.
In his speech, the MEP from MRF / Renew Europe, Ilhan Kyuchyuk touched upon the topic of vaccination of European citizens, taking into account the good trends from last year, which, however, do not apply to 2021.
“The first good news is that there was a common strategy of the European Commission for the purchase of vaccines. This was the right step, because otherwise it would lead us to vaccination nationalism. The second right step was the symbolism, the first deliveries to be delivered at the same time to the whole EU. “, said Kyuchyuk.
The MEP said that Europe has delayed the vaccination of its citizens and presented data for comparison with other countries and their rates of vaccination.
“Only 3% of the European population has been vaccinated. In comparison: for the United States it is 9%, for Great Britain it is 14%, for Israel – over 60% “, said Ilhan Kyuchyuk during his speech.
According to the MEP, the possible delay is due to gaps in production and supply contracts, as it is illogical for vaccines produced in Europe not to remain in the Union.
In conclusion, Kyuchyuk called for transparency, as well as clear answers from the responsible authorities, in order to restore trust between the European institutions and European citizens.
