Kyuchyuk highlighted three priorities, including a commitment to the Western Balkans
During the debates in the European Parliament today, MEP Ilhan Kyuchyuk declared his support for the French rotating presidency, which began on January 1, 2022. According to him, this is a key opportunity for Europe, because in crises like the current ones, Europe needs unity more than ever.
“Relance, Puissance, Appartenance – la devise de la présidence française de l’Union européenne. It perfectly describes the Europe of today, faced with the health crisis, the rise of aggressive powers and climate disruption. Europe is counting on unity to overcome these difficult times, and we all need a more effective Union,” Kyuchyuk said.
The MEP outlined three priorities that he said were key to France’s six-month presidency.
„Firstly – building a genuine European sovereignty and strategic autonomy. In second place – continue engaging with the enlargement process in the Western Balkans and the Eastern Partnership countries. It is our best investment in security, values and interests. These countries are a historical and geographical part of the EU and deserve to be part of today’s Union. And third is the Conference on the Future of Europe – this is not a listening exercise, this is a project that can set the direction for the EU’s development. “, said the co-chair of ALDE.
The debates of the members of the Parliament started after the President of France Emmanuel Macron presented to them the priorities of the rotating presidency of France. Just a month ago, the French head of state announced the presidency’s motto “Recovery, strength and belonging”, stressing the European response to tackling the challenges facing the Union. According to him, the presidency’s priorities include reform of the Schengen area, an attempt to resolve the bilateral issue between Bulgaria and North Macedonia, a minimum wage worthy of all Europeans and measures related to climate change, and the creation of a single European market. In her speech, Macron also emphasized the importance of professional equality between men and women and the fight against discrimination.
Stefan Sejourne, President of Renew Europe, also spoke in support of the French Presidency. He said his political group would support the French presidency in the name of fairer trade and a decent minimum wage for every European. Sejourne proposed two initiatives for Europeans: “We want the French Presidency to be the occasion for the Simon Vail Pact in support of gender equality and youth Europe.” We want a platform for European young people to work, do internships and study. We will fight for the future and to speed up the European timetable. We will always be there – we want a green and free Europe, “Sejurne concluded.
