Kyuchyuk to the President of the International Criminal Court: Crimes against humanity must not go unpunished!

DROI JURI joint Committee - Exchange of views with Judge Tomoko Akane, President of the International Criminal Court

“In times of growing geopolitical turmoil, the work of the International Criminal Court is crucial in addressing deliberate attacks on civilians, mass displacement of people, and severe human rights violations in conflicts around the world. The ICC plays a significant role not only in holding perpetrators accountable and reinforcing the principle that no one is above the law but also in demonstrating that justice is not just about punishment—it is also about recognition, deterrence, and the protection of human dignity.

Crimes against humanity know no borders. Regardless of where they are committed, they affect the entire international community and undermine the foundations of human civilization. The impunity for such crimes is not only a legal failure but also a moral one. This is why crimes against humanity must not go unpunished!”

This was stated by Ilhan Kyuchyuk, Chair of the Committee on Legal Affairs, during an exchange of views with the President of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Tomoko Akane.

The Chair of the Legal Affairs Committee in the European Parliament emphasized that the ICC faces numerous legal challenges, highlighting that over the years, the Court has established itself as a beacon of hope for the victims of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide.

Ilhan Kyuchyuk was firm in stating that the European Union and the international community have a duty to support the independence and effectiveness of the ICC:
“We must oppose any attempt to undermine its legitimacy, interfere with its work, or exert pressure on it!”
