From Today, Our Borders No Longer Divide Us – They Unite Us!
Today will remain a historic day for Bulgaria, Romania, and Europe – after 13 years of being held back on the path toward deeper European integration, our two countries have finally been accepted as full members of the Schengen Area. This is a victory for European solidarity! And for Bulgaria – it is equality! Schengen is no longer just a dream – today, Schengen is a reality!
This was written by MEP Ilhan Kyuchyuk from Renew Europe / Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) on social media, after the Council of the EU unanimously decided to admit Bulgaria and Romania into Schengen by land.

From today, our borders no longer divide us – they unite us! Today will remain in the history of Bulgaria, Romania, and Europe. After 13 years of being stopped on the road toward deeper European integration, our two countries have finally been accepted as full members of the Schengen Area. This is not merely a political decision – it is a victory for all who believed and never gave up on this goal over the years.
The obstacles we faced were many – sometimes unfair, sometimes discouraging – but it was precisely there that we found the strength to show unity and to prove that we can look beyond difficulties.
As someone who has worked hard for this cause over the years, I have witnessed up close the efforts of dozens of people – politicians, experts, citizens. I saw dedication, professionalism, and the determination to show that Bulgaria and Romania are more than ready to be part of Schengen.
The free movement of people, goods, services, and ideas will give new momentum to our economies, to our culture, and to our relations with our neighbors.
To all those who stood by us through the years – in Bulgaria, in Romania, and across Europe – thank you. This is a victory for European solidarity! And for Bulgaria – it is equality!
Schengen is no longer just a dream – today, Schengen is a reality!
