Kyuchyuk from Strasbourg: Why is the issue of Bulgaria and Romania’s accession to Schengen not a priority for the Swedish presidency?

EP Plenary session - SOTEU 2022 - State of the Union speech

Today, during the debate on the priorities of the Swedish rotating presidency of the EU, it became clear that two important topics are missing from the outlined priorities, namely the expansion of the Schengen Area to include Bulgaria and Romania, and the integration of the Western Balkans.

In his speech from the Strasbourg podium, MEP Ilhan Kyuchyuk expressed dissatisfaction and criticized the Swedish presidency’s agenda.

“Mr. Prime Minister, two topics are missing from the Swedish presidency’s agenda. One of them is the future of Schengen – Bulgaria and Romania must finally become part of the Schengen Area. Why is this not part of the Swedish presidency’s agenda? How can we win the hearts and minds of European citizens? How, in 2024, can the European project be one focused on democracy, the rule of law, high democratic standards, and progress for the future? How can all of this be achieved? It is not possible if Bulgaria and Romania are not included in Schengen!” emphasized the leader of the European liberals.

In his speech, the MEP also highlighted the topic of the integration of the Western Balkans, which he considers important but missing from the presidency’s agenda.

“The issue of Western Balkans integration is extremely important. Will the Swedish presidency ensure a good continuation of the policies of the previous, Czech, and all the presidencies that placed the topic of the Western Balkans at the center of their agenda?” asked Kyuchyuk.

According to him, this is not just an EU issue; it is a geopolitical matter that requires serious attention, regardless of who is holding the EU presidency.
