“In recent years, we have faced severe crises – a pandemic, war in Europe, and the tragedy that struck Turkey and Syria. Against the backdrop of all these challenges, citizens are asking whether the EU is actually working for them? In Bulgarian society, we have the feeling that the EU is not working for us. But since we became part of the EU, we have one major flaw – the passivity of the state. Bulgaria is consistently absent from any of the EU initiatives, always in the last carriage. The risk of this is that our country loses influence and relevance in the process and, accordingly, is not taken seriously,” said Kyuchyuk during the seminar “The Youth and the Future of Europe,” held today in Plovdiv.
The event began with a minute of silence in memory of the victims of the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria. On the initiative of the hosts, and as part of the large-scale fundraising campaign launched by the MRF, guests collected donations for the victims.
Addressing the audience, the leader of the European Liberals emphasized that since its establishment, the MRF has been one of the most pro-European parties in Bulgaria, and its members have proven to be the best prepared.
“In the years when there were European funds, if 10 jobs were created in Bulgaria, 7 of them were from the EU. That’s why the notion that the EU is external to us and that if we do not have a relationship and responsibility towards the processes in the Union, skepticism among Bulgarian citizens towards the EU will deepen. The EU can work in the interest of our citizens, as long as the country is governed competently,” Kyuchyuk added.
The MEP also commented on the tragedy in our southern neighbor and highlighted Europe’s solidarity.
“Nearly 2000 people are on the ground as rescue teams. We are in constant contact with the EU Crisis Commissioner, Janez Lenarčič. What Bulgaria did made me truly proud to be a Bulgarian citizen. In one of our first conversations with Lenarčič, he firmly stated: ‘Bulgaria was the first, but it was not asked to be the first. Bulgaria wanted to be first, and it became first, it was the first to extend a hand among European countries. And you, as a Bulgarian politician, should be proud of your country,'” Kyuchyuk shared with the audience.
Kyuchyuk confirmed that a donor conference will be held soon. As part of it, parallel donor conferences will take place, including one organized by the ALDE party.
The event was attended by citizens, members, and supporters of the MRF, as well as business representatives.
