Ilhan Kyuchyuk: Integration of the Western Balkans and Ukraine’s status as an EU candidate

“Strong EU integration and enlargement, as well as granting Ukraine the status of an EU candidate,” Ilhan Kyuchyuk said during the conference “Liberals for the Future of Europe – from a conference to Europe reform” hosted by the MEP.

According to him, Europe has managed to unite in the most important moments – the pandemic and the war in Ukraine, but needs to change institutionally. Kyuchyuk is adamant that crises have awakened Europe to solidarity, protection and unity.

The MEP commented on the Conference on the Future of Europe, from which the final conclusions and recommendations were presented on 9 May in a report containing 49 goals and over 320 EU reform measures.

“The Conference on the Future of Europe has given direction to EU development. This one-year unprecedented democratic exercise involving citizens, politicians and stakeholders has highlighted the voice of citizens in the European institutions. We consider the Conference to be successful because it managed to bring together both the positive and the negative for the development of the EU, which also contribute to the future reform of the Union, “Kyuchyuk commented.

“We cannot look at the countries of the Western Balkans impassively,” Kyuchyuk said. According to him, together with the other member states, they should take seriously the enlargement of the Western Balkans, because this is the only way to break with the authoritarian past of each country.

MRF Chairman Mustafa Karadayi also sent a strong message to those present at the event, saying: “We must not be afraid to deploy a united Europe.” The MRF leader was adamant that postponing EU enlargement to the Western Balkans should not continue.

The chairman of Renew Europe, who is also the head of the delegation from Brussels, told the audience that Europe’s goals must be to anticipate crises. According to him, the results of the Conference on the Future of Europe are positive, but through it the citizens have given a clear signal to the institutions that by consulting civil society reforms can be made.
