Ilhan Kyuchyuk, MEP: International law is systematically eroding – the crisis of the global order is a fact

EP Plenary session - 2023 and 2024 reports on Albania

“International law, the backbone of the post-war global order, is undergoing systematic erosion. The world is not falling apart because of a lack of rules, but because of a lack of will to defend them.” This was stated by Member of the European Parliament Ilhan Kyuchyuk during a debate in Strasbourg dedicated to human rights and democracy worldwide and the European Union’s policy.

In his address, Kyuchyuk made it clear that the Report on Human Rights and Democracy clearly identifies the problems: impunity, double standards, and the selective application of international norms.

“The consequences are visible everywhere – in Gaza, civilians are paying the price of failed international protection; in Ukraine, sovereignty is being brutally violated; in Venezuela, democracy is being suffocated; and in Iran, repression has been turned into state policy. These are not separate crises. This is one and the same crisis – a crisis of the contemporary global order,” the MEP stated.

According to him, without consistent protection of international law and without abandoning double standards, the global system of security, human rights, and democracy will continue to disintegrate.
