MEP Ilhan Kyuchyuk received a prestigious award from Yıldız Technical University in Istanbul in recognition of his contribution to the development of dialogue and cooperation between the European Union and Turkey, as well as for his active work in the fields of education, science, and youth policies.
During the official event, Ilhan Kyuchyuk delivered a lecture to the university’s students and faculty, offering an up-to-date perspective on relations between Turkey and the European Union, their challenges, and opportunities for future development. Among the official guests at the event was Turkey’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mehmet Kemal Bozay.
In his remarks, the MEP emphasized that despite the de facto freezing of the accession process since 2018, Turkey remains a key strategic partner of the EU, with deep mutual interdependence in areas such as the economy, security, education, and scientific research. He highlighted the need for a pragmatic and “positive agenda” focused on concrete areas of cooperation, including the modernization of the Customs Union, digitalization, the green transition, science, and innovation.
“The strength of the European Union does not stem solely from the size of its market, but from its ability to build political and economic integration around shared values. In this sense, cooperation in the field of education plays a key role in restoring mutual trust and in strengthening Turkey’s ties to the European model,” Kyuchyuk stressed.
Special emphasis was placed on the role of universities as bridges between societies and as a sustainable factor in building trust beyond the framework of traditional diplomacy. Ilhan Kyuchyuk underlined the importance of academic cooperation, joint research, and exchange programs as among the most successful and promising dimensions of EU–Turkey relations.
In conclusion, Ilhan Kyuchyuk addressed a message to the students: “The future of relations between Turkey and the European Union will be shaped not only by political decisions, but also by the knowledge created at universities and by the connections built by young people,” he emphasized.
