Conference on the Future of Europe: Plenary meets for the first time

MEP Ilhan Kyuchyuk is among the Bulgarian participants in the Conference on behalf of the European Parliament

On Saturday 19 June, the inaugural Plenary meeting of the Conference on the Future of Europe was held in Strasbourg. Today’s Plenary marks another important moment in the life of the Conference – an unprecedented, open and inclusive European democratic exercise. The Conference Plenary comprises representatives from the European Parliament,  from the Council and from the European Commission, as well as representatives from all national Parliaments and citizens. The debates will be held for several months, and the purpose of the meetings is until the spring of 2022 to formulate clear priorities and guidelines for the future of Europe.

MEP Ilhan Kyuchyuk is among the Bulgarian participants in the Conference on behalf of the European Parliament.

„We are not living in the 20th century, we are living in the 21st century, and expectations of the EU are much higher because the challenges are much more complex. All crises, including the last, which is not over yet, show us two things – the need for quick decisions. We need to hear the voice of the citizens, but at the same time we are the people who need to take important decisions for the EU.ТThis conference is not for today’s union, it is for the future, young people must play a key role in it. We need to see the Western Balkans as an integral part of the EU, so their involvement is crucial.”,  Kyuchyuk said during his speech in the plenary.

Following opening statements by the Co-Chairs of the Executive Board, representatives – including citizens – discussed the purpose and expectations of the Conference, comprising the European Citizens’ Panels, the National Panels and events, and the Multilingual Digital Platform.

Discussions are structured thematically around the recommendations of the Citizens’ Panel and the information gathered by the multilingual digital platform. The European Citizens’ Panels will convene in September and October to prepare their input to future plenary debates, including a set of recommendations for the Union to follow-up on, based on citizens’ contributions collected via the Platform.

The final results of the Conference will be presented in a report to the Joint Presidency. The three EU institutions – the European Parliament, Council and European Commission will immediately explore possible effective follow-up on this report, each of them working in their area of competence and in accordance with the EU Treaties.
