Kyuchyuk urges Bulgaria and Romania to begin developing joint energy projects in the Black Sea for diversification.
The European liberal leader participated today in the “Energy and Security in the Black Sea Region” conference held in Bucharest, Romania.
Key topics at the conference included the strategic importance of the Black Sea, the roles of Bulgaria and Romania as NATO members, and the Green Deal as a challenge to Russia.
“In recent years, the region has faced the ‘balance of power’ challenge in a highly dynamic manner, combining political, military, economic, and energy aspects. NATO and EU presence in the Black Sea region has reshaped the Euro-Atlantic community’s geostrategic orientation. Meanwhile, the region remains a traditional crossroads between Europe and Asia, with Russia’s strong ambition to control it. The strategic positions of Bulgaria and Romania can contribute to Black Sea security and, as solid NATO members, help deter Russian aggression. The Black Sea should be a sea of peace, with substantial trade and transit potential to reduce energy dependence on Russia,” Kyuchyuk stated during the conference.
According to Kyuchyuk, Russia uses energy as a foreign policy weapon and profits from the oil and gas crisis. The war, combined with limited supply from other sources, has led to significant price increases, impacting European consumers despite EU measures. Kyuchyuk discussed the significance of the Green Deal, which he believes poses a challenge for Russia, while the current crisis has accelerated the transition to renewable energy. By 2030, 45% of the EU’s energy mix should be renewable.
He emphasized that the Black Sea region will be crucial in determining whether peace and democracy will prevail or if repression and tyranny will become the norm in the Euro-Atlantic area.
At an official ceremony following the conference, Ilhan Kyuchyuk was awarded the “Flame of Freedom” by the Institute for Freedom and Democracy. Over the years, this honor has been awarded to prominent liberals and defenders of freedom and democracy.
During the day, Kyuchyuk held several high-level meetings with government representatives in the Romanian Parliament.
