MEP Kyuchyuk: European Commission Funds Controversial Report Serving Economedia Interests

During his speech in the European Parliament on Monday, MEP from MRF/Renew Europe Ilhan Kyuchyuk touched upon a report prepared by the International Press Institute and funded by the European Commission, Kyuchyuk’s office said on Tuesday.

According to him, the report contains extremely disturbing circumstances regarding the media environment in the Republic of Bulgaria. Kyuchyuk says that dangerous precedents are thus being set by using distorted information that has no evidentiary value.

“The most dangerous precedent is allowing large media owners hidden behind the facade of NGOs to legitimise reports to be used in the international community. This same report very crudely and tendentiously serves the interests of the Bulgarian media group Economedia and its owner Ivo Prokopiev whose reputation in Bulgaria is more than questionable,” Kyuchyuk said.

In the words of the MEP, this is the real and extremely dangerous “takeover” of the media and the democratic environment.

Ilhan Kyuchyuk called for more transparency and insisted that the European Commission should not allow the funding of such controversial reports in member states.
