Ilhan Kyuchyuk from Strasbourg: 2023 Should Be the Year of Bulgaria and Romania in Schengen!

EP Plenary session - The recent JHA Council decision on Schengen accession

“Are Bulgarian and Romanian citizens not European citizens? Or are we telling them that they are second-class citizens? Don’t they deserve to be part of Schengen, don’t they deserve to be part of the Eurozone?” asked Ilhan Kyuchyuk, leader of the European Liberals, during the debate regarding the decision of the member states (EU Council) to keep Bulgaria and Romania out of the Schengen Area.

Kyuchyuk emphasized the efforts made by the European Commission in support of the two countries’ membership in Schengen.

He pointed out that over the past 11 years, many changes have occurred both within and outside the EU, but unfortunately, the attitude of some countries towards Bulgaria and Romania has remained unchanged.

The MEP highlighted that the people of both countries have paid a high price to be part of NATO and the EU. He firmly stated:

“We will continue on this path because we believe we are on the right geopolitical course. We want to be full and equal members of the EU, but there can be no two ‘Europes,’ no double standards. There can only be one united Europe. So, let’s unite our efforts and work together to make 2023 the year of Bulgaria and Romania in Schengen!”
