Ilhan Kyuchyuk holds key meetings in Luxembourg – talks with Laura Kövesi and EU Court President Koen Lenaerts

Ilhan Kyuchyuk, Chair of the European Parliament’s Legal Affairs Committee, held high-level meetings in Luxembourg with Koen Lenaerts, President of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), and Laura Kövesi, European Chief Prosecutor.

During his meeting with Kövesi, the two discussed the results achieved by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO), as outlined in its 2024 Annual Report. The main focus of the conversation was the effectiveness of investigations into financial crimes and the challenges faced by the EPPO in fighting corruption and the misuse of EU funds.

Kyuchyuk and Kövesi also exchanged views on the work of the Legal Affairs Committee, particularly in the context of procedures related to parliamentary immunities. Both stressed the need for enhanced cooperation between European institutions to ensure the independence and efficiency of judicial and investigative bodies.

The Legal Affairs Committee plays a key role in immunity procedures and in the broader context of the rule of law. Our cooperation with the European Public Prosecutor’s Office is a vital tool in ensuring accountability and justice across the EU,” Kyuchyuk stated.

In his meeting with Koen Lenaerts, discussions focused on key issues concerning the rule of law in the EU, the legal framework for protecting fundamental rights, and the role of European institutions in safeguarding legal certainty and the effectiveness of EU legislation.

Both underlined the importance of close cooperation between the Court of Justice and the European Parliament to strengthen the rule of law within the Union, address challenges facing the European judicial system, and improve cross-border cooperation in the field of justice.

Kyuchyuk emphasized that now, more than ever, it is essential to ensure that the legal principles of the European Union are upheld and fairly applied in all Member States. As Chair of the Legal Affairs Committee, he noted that cooperation with EU institutions is primarily aimed at delivering predictability and fairness for all citizens.

The meetings concluded with a shared commitment to continuing dialogue and collaboration on issues related to deepening judicial integration, enhancing legal certainty, and improving law enforcement across the European Union.
