Ilhan Kyuchyuk plenary speech on Syria situation in Palmyra
Honorable Mr. President,
Dear Colleagues,
Unfortunately the situation in Syria is dramatically escalating in the recent months and the actions of Assad regime, Daesh and other terroristic organizations are not in decline no matter the efforts of the international coalition.
This time the ancient historic city of Palmyra is under the siege of Daesh. Palmyra is one of the most important cultural center of the ancient world, but Daesh perceives it as important gas field and part from the war strategy. The EU must make use of whole its instruments in order to protect the heritage of Palmyra and other Syrian objects, as well as to strengthen its cooperation with the Secretary General of UNESCO in the fight with the “cultural cleansing”.
I would like to stress on the continuation of the violation of human rights, of the international humane law, of the torturing and mass arrests by the regime of Assad. The acts of random detention and disappearance of journalists, who are human rights activists and humanitarian workers are criminal deeds that need to be condemned and punished.
Thank you for your attention!
