During today’s debates on Bulgaria and Romania’s accession to the Schengen area, MEP Ilhan Kyuchyuk strongly criticized the double standards applied to some EU member states.
According to Kyuchyuk, various arguments have been used for years to delay Bulgaria and Romania’s membership in Schengen. He asserted that all obstacles to admitting both countries have now been removed.
“We need serious political decisions from responsible politicians. It is unacceptable for some to be kept at the door, despite being part of the EU, while others fully enjoy the Union’s benefits and opportunities. This double standard creates a two-tier citizenship—some are treated as more European than others. This is unacceptable! It’s neither European, nor civilized, nor should it be imposed by different governments,” Kyuchyuk stated firmly.
The MEP called for a strong stance from the European Parliament and the Commission, urging the Council to meet the expectations of European citizens.
Earlier today, it was announced that Bulgarian MEPs submitted a joint declaration highlighting that Bulgaria fulfills all Schengen external border obligations and has proven itself a reliable and predictable partner.
The European Commission has repeatedly advocated in favor of Bulgaria and Romania. However, the Netherlands continues to oppose this step.
