“European partners expect Bulgaria to form a regular cabinet, so the country can be seen as a proactive and competent member of the EU. A chronic problem for Bulgaria is its perpetual waiting on the periphery, which pushes us further away from the core where important decisions are made,” said the leader of the European Liberals, Ilhan Kyuchyuk, during the conference “Bulgaria and Romania – Eurointegration the Hard Way?” held at the House of Europe in Sofia.
The event also featured Romanian MEP Vlad Botoș, Spanish MEP Eva-Maria Poptcheva, Atanas Pekanov, Deputy Prime Minister for European Funds Management, and Gergana Passy, former Minister for European Affairs.
According to Kyuchyuk, Bulgaria and Romania must continue their joint path, which began with the two countries’ accession to the EU. Together, the two countries stand stronger on the European stage. In recent years, trade and cultural exchange between Bulgaria and Romania have become increasingly significant.
The MEP shared that he and his Romanian colleague Vlad Botoș have an idea for a powerful campaign to promote Schengen membership: a major Schengen conference aimed at connecting regions. The campaign’s message and symbolism will be distinctly political, emphasizing that municipalities on one side of the border can work with those on the other side, utilizing available EU funds, Kyuchyuk highlighted.
